Hola mis amigos! We tried Avocados the other night. We really wanted to go to La Bamba Cafe, but decided for the sake of Saskatoon Slop, we would sacrifice. And we did sacrifice.

Avocado, which surprisingly has very bland guacamole, does not do a lot that will impress you. The service is average, the atmosphere is average and the price is more than what I wanted to pay for the meal.

Again, I just was disappointed that a place named Avocado would have such boring guacamole. Anyway, I will move on. I ordered the beef burrito and sweet potato fries. The burrito itself was average, but it was good enough to eat most of it. The sweet potato fries were average. The Spadina Free House has much better fries.

Avocado is not a bad place to eat, but just at the bottom of “south of the border” (well, south of two borders for us) restaurants in Saskatoon. On an unrelated note, I don’t really like Avocado’s website.

Hola mis amigos. La Bamba Cafe of Boychuk Drive gave us the best Mexican dining experience in Saskatoon. Just thinking back to the chips and guacamole dip makes me want to head over there right now. The guacamole was the freshest dip I have tasted in a long time.

The entire meal was quite fresh. The chipotle tacos were packed with flavor. The dish also came with rice and beans, which tasted like rice and beans.

The space is on the small side and I would recommend reservations for a Friday night. Even though it was small, the one server could have used a hand as we had to ask for drinks several times. The atmosphere felt authentic though.

I was a bit taken back by the price. Most dishes are in the double digits. Again, the food is flavorful and fresh, but the price was a bit much. I am not sure why tacos with rice and beans should cost $14.

Today at lunch, I travelled to Latin America. Actually, just to 22nd Street and Avenue P. EE Burritos gives you authenic Latin American food. I am not sure if the owner, Ernesto Hernandez, is from Latin America or South America, but the food is authenic.

At $7 a burrito, some might expect more food, but I was completely satisfied with my beef burrito. I enjoyed the burrito with a Cascola Cream Soda. It took me back to the time I spent in Belize drinking carbonated glucose-fructose water out of a bottle. Except this product came from Surrey, B.C.

The atmosphere compliments the authentic food as well. A small area to purchase groceries as well as a large area for dining in that serves as a dance floor on Friday nights. The guys in the back making the burrito sung in Spanish (or maybe Portuguese).

Hola mis amigos! Las Palapas often slips off my radar because it is located on Victoria Avenue. We stopped in for a lunch and left quite happy. The experience may have been a bit influenced by the near perfect weather of 30 degrees with a slight breeze. Rarely do we get those days, but since it was so near perfect, we enjoyed the patio.

Chips and salsa is a must in any south of the border type restaurant. Nothing too special to discuss, but the drinks with the chips and salsa were impressive. The non-alcoholic Jamaican Tea provided a great sipping beverage to start the meal.

The obvious choice on the menu was the Big Burrito. Called the burrito loco, it contained everything you expect in a burrito such as beans, beef, pork, lettuce, cheese, onions and some salsas. Although the burrito was noticeably better than Taco Time, it was not the best ever. To say it might possibly be the best Mexican in Saskatoon is like labeling a native of Mississippi the best skip in curling.

I have heard some say they find Las Palapas expensive, but that wasn’t my first impression. Even though there are cheaper places to eat, the prices are fair for the amount of food you get. I asked the server about the free loyalty rewards program which is placed on the front of the menu, but she didn’t know much about it, so I passed on the membership.
